Dear Friends,

You may be aware of the sudden demise of our friend> Abhinav Dhupar (B. Tech, Civil Engineering, 2000-2004, Aravali Hostel) in a road accident on Aug 16, 2006.

To keep Abhinav's memories alive, we are in the process of initiating a scholarship / award in his name. Right now we are in the process of setting up a corpus fund as per the Institute rules. The fund will be managed by the institute. The guidelines and selection criteria regarding the scholarship/award will be established by us pending the final approval. The scholarship/award will be funded by the interest earned on the fund every year. The management committee which will decide on the selection of the awardee(s) will have Abhinav's parents or one of his batch mates. Other likely members are HOD, 1-2 faculty members of Civil Engineering Department, IIT Delhi.

The minimum amount required for setting up the scholarship is Rs 2.5 lakhs and for award it is Rs.1 lakh. We will decide on whether to go for scholarship/award after getting an estimate of all contributions. Proper accounts shall be maintained and an annual statement of income and expenditure relating to the award will be submitted to the management committee every year which shall be circulated among the donors. We have not set up any lower or upper limit for the contributions. So if you are willing to contribute to the effort, email the amount you want to contribute to dhupar.grant@yahoo.co.in and we will get in touch with you. Kindly let us know ASAP so that we may proceed with other formalities.

Govt to drop RTI amendment Act

Govt to drop RTI amendment Act

Updated Saturday , August 19, 2006 at 18:51

New Delhi: The Government has dropped its plan to amend the Right To Information Act (RTI) which would have barred public access to file notings, sources have told CNN-IBN.
Sources said there are strong indications that the Government will not push for the amendment and this means file notings, an important part of the Government's decision making process, will be made available to the public.
The amendment proposed that excluding social issues, file notings on all other matters should not be available for public scrutiny.
Social activists, former bureaucrats and the Left parties opposed this, saying the curb would dilute the Act.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri said on Saturday that based on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's decision, the amendment will not be introduced in the monsoon session which concludes on August 25.
He said there have been considerable apprehensions about the proposed amendment. "Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister have received several representations in this regard and it has been decided that the issue should be first discussed with all stakeholders," he said.
In view of this, Pachauri said the Bill to amend the Act was not likely to be introduced now.
Social activist Anna Hazare called off his 11-day-old hunger strike against the amendment in Alandi, Maharashtra, after Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan told him about the Government's decision.
